Frequently Asked Questions

If your question is not answered here then please use our information request form

Q Is AutoHoot compatible with the 5, 4, 1, 0 starting sequence?
A Yes

Q A small group of us would like to practice racing but can not always secure the services of a race officer. Can AutoHoot just do a single start?
A Yes. One of your group can switch AutoHoot on and then join in with the start leaving AutoHoot to manage the sound signals.

Q Do you supply the battery and horn?
A We can supply the Ongaro Marine 10028 Dual Trumpet horn. It is a high quality all stainless steel horn which we have found suitable for use on a committee boat in open water. However the requirement varies from club to club and small inland dinghy clubs may find the type of low cost car horn that can be purchased from your local car accessory shop is suitable. See Horn manufactures and suppliers.  The cost of shipping makes it more sensible for the customer to source the battery locally and often AutoHoot will be run from the committee boats main batteries.

Q We run pursuit races at our club, can AutoHoot be programmed for non-standard sequences?
A Yes. AutoHoot has two user programmable sequence selections.

Q Is AutoHoot portable?
A It is straight forward to make a portable AutoHoot system by mounting AutoHoot, horn and battery in a suitable tool box. See Potable AutoHoot

Q Can AutoHoot provide a signal to start a clock?
A Yes. There is a logic level output that can be used to start a clock (or computer) if required. A user programmable sequence must be used to control this output.
Q I have been using AutoHoot out in spray and rain on a RIB - should I take any special precautions?
A The AutoHoot box is sealed to at least IP65 (protected against jets of water from all directions) so it will survive the rain and spray. If it is salt water spray you should avoid a build up of salt round the switches by rinsing the box down when you wash the RIB. The first AutoHoot was installed on the mast of Lymington Town Sailing Club’s starting boat which is permanently moored out in the Solent and exposed to all weather conditions. After 2 years the switches became clogged with salt and we replaced the front of the unit. However after giving it a good clean the original front worked fine and is still in use in a portable unit we have.
Q RR26 refers to a long hoot for the 1 minute signal. Does AutoHoot do this?
A Yes. The latest revision of the software automatically increases the length of the hoot for the 1 minute signal when the RR26 sequence is used. With previous software versions this could be done using a user programmable sequence.

Q

Can AutoHoot be used for follow on starts?
A AutoHoot can be set to continuously repeat a sequence so the race officer just needs to switch it on at the first warning signal and switch it off after the last class starts.
